Low Carbon Tourism – Building Sustainable Communities

Linkages to other programs

The following programs are not directly connected to the Low Carbon Tourism: Building Sustainable Communities Initiative, but offer various opportunities and assistance for businesses wanting to adopt low-carbon measures.

Programs have been classified as general sustainability, waste, water or energy-related. Some programs offer information and advice, others provide certification options and others (e.g. ESS program over the page) can provide financial support for low-carbon activities. Note that participation in some of these programs may incur costs.

General Sustainability Programs

Sustainability Advantage:This NSW Government program assists businesses with becoming more sustainable through tailored projects on aspects such as sustainability planning, efficient resource use and carbon management. This support can include workshops, networking and one-on-one specialist help. Participating businesses may also gain promotional opportunities by earning bronze, silver or gold member status. For more information see: www.environment.nsw.gov.au/sustainbus/sustainabilityadvantage.htm or call 02 8837 6000

NABERS (National Australian Built Environment Rating System):NABERS is a national rating system administered by the NSW Government that measures the environmental performance of buildings. Hotels, offices and shopping centres can obtain star ratings for energy and water use based on a comparison with similar facilities. The NABERS website provides a free self-assessment tool. If you wish to publish or promote your rating, you can search on the website for an accredited assessor who can provide an accredited rating for a fee. See: www.nabers.gov.au

National Carbon Offsets Standard Carbon Neutral Program: This Australian Government program allows businesses to estimate their carbon footprint and then purchase carbon offsets to become certified as carbon neutral. Businesses may choose to become certified (for a fee) and display the logo of theNational Carbon Offsets Standard. For more details see: www.climatechange.gov.au/climate-change/carbon-neutral/carbon-neutral-program

Living Greener:This Australian Government website has advice relating to energy, water, waste and transport, including details such as conversion charts for energy efficient lighting. See:  www.livinggreener.gov.au/

Waste-Related Programs

Blue Mountains City Councilprovides a range of waste management services to businesses in the Blue Mountains. Apart from regular kerbside waste collection and booked collection services, BMCC also provides advice and discounted equipment for composting, drop-off points for mobile phone recycling and other e-waste (e.g. computers and TVs) and a list of organisations that accept working household items for reuse. See: www.bmcc.nsw.gov.au/yourcommunity/wastemanagement

EPA Waste Grants:NSW EPA offers grants to small and medium enterprises for recycling/reuse initiatives through Bin Trim and the Industrial Ecology Business Network. See: www.epa.nsw.gov.au/waste/busrecycgrants.htm

Environmental Trust: Grants are available for waste-related projects including organics infrastructure (e.g. composting), recycling and food waste avoidance. See: www.environment.nsw.gov.au/grants/envtrust.htm

Water-Related Programs

Sydney Water:Sydney Water’s website provides tips for businesses on managing water use, including water efficiency, leak prevention, rainwater tanks and benchmarking your business’ water use. See: www.sydneywater.com.au/SW/your-business/managing-your-water-use/water-efficiency-tips/index.htm

Energy-Related Programs

Energy retailers:Many energy retailers have advice on achieving energy savings listed on their websites. Check out your retailer’s website or search for retailers at: www.aer.gov.au/node/1265

Fridge Buyback scheme: This scheme collects and recycles unwanted second fridges for free, provided that the fridge is over 200L in capacity, was manufactured in 1996 or earlier and is a second fridge that has been in regular use. See: http://wp.fridgebuyback.com.au

NSW Energy Saver program: This NSW Government program provides support for businesses wanting to reduce their energy use and costs. It provides subsidised technical investigations, energy efficiency training, tailored financial business case advice and support with obtaining payment for energy reductions through the NSW Energy Savings Scheme (see below). This program is primarily aimed at businesses that spend over $60,000 per year on electricity. See: www.environment.nsw.gov.au/business/energy-saver.htm

NSW Energy Savings Scheme(ESS): This NSW Government scheme allows businesses to earn certificates if they reduce their energy consumption below their current baseline level. The certificates earned can then be sold to generate revenue for the business. Small businesses that are unlikely to create enough certificates to justify becoming accredited themselves may choose to work through an Accredited Certificate Provider who can aggregate the energy savings from a number of businesses. The table below lists Accredited Certificate Providers who have indicated that they are willing and able to work with tourism businesses in the Blue Mountains on creating ESS certificates from energy-saving actions. It is advisable to contact an Accredited Certificate Provider before undertaking energy-saving measures for the ESS to ensure that the correct energy-savings methodology is applied. The businesses below may also be able to provide more general advice on implementing energy-savings measures. Please note that these are commercial providers who may charge fees or commissions for their services. The Low Carbon Tourism: Building Sustainable Communities Initiative does not endorse any particular service provider and does not bear any liability for the services and advice provided.
